National Better Hearing and Speech Month

The most anticipated moment for a parent is the sound of a childís first words. But what if the words are delayed, jumbled, or never come at all. Speech and language problems can affect early learning and self-esteem. Speech and language disorders can affect anyone at any age. Millions of infants, children, and adults in America suffer from a communication or swallowing disorder such as stuttering, delayed language, or a voice problem, a personís ability to learn and interact with others can be affected. Also, more than twenty-one million infants, children, and adults in America suffer from some degree of hearing loss in one or both ears. Such hearing impairments can go unsuspected until the sounds of daily life become faded or unrecognizable. Rather then accepting an impairment as an inevitable part of aging, or shying away from social interaction to avoid embarrassment seek proper treatment, whether from an audiologist for hearing loss or from a pathologists for speech and language problems.
